Best for
  • Individual users running AGNT on a personal machine.
  • Small teams of 2-10 people sharing one backend.
  • Developers wanting a local agent backend they can inspect and extend.
  • Automation builders needing visual workflows plus AI judgment.
  • Power users wanting durable agents instead of throwaway chats.
  • Teams that want an AI assistant to directly operate on GitHub repos and collaboration workflows
  • Users already in the GitHub Copilot ecosystem who want a zero-deployment remote option
Not for
  • Public multi-tenant SaaS.
  • Hosting unrelated organizations on one shared instance.
  • Large enterprises with 50+ concurrent users or zero-trust isolation requirements.
  • Users who only need a hosted chatbot or prompt playground.
  • Scenarios where you don't want the assistant to have write access to repos (enable only read-only toolsets)
  • Environments with strict network isolation for private repos that can't reach the official remote endpoint
Required permissions
  • Access local filesystem to read code and files.
  • Execute custom code (JavaScript/Python).
  • Call external APIs including AI providers.
  • Send and receive messages (Telegram, Discord, etc.).
  • Access network to connect to services.
  • A personal access token (PAT) or OAuth App token; effective scope depends on the token's own permissions
  • Enabling toolsets like actions/issues/pull_requests grants write access — request tokens on a least-privilege basis
Risks and side effects
  • Local API on port 3333 might be exposed to network, risking unauthorized access.
  • Ensure production secrets are changed for secure deployments.
  • Plugins can contain arbitrary code, so only install from trusted sources.
  • Browser automation may consume significant resources.
  • Write toolsets (creating/merging PRs, triggering workflows) can cause accidental changes if the token is overscoped — try a read-only toolset first
  • In hosted mode, credentials travel via the Authorization header — make sure the client-to-api.githubcopilot.com connection is trusted
