Best for
  • Developers using shadcn/ui
  • Teams wanting AI assistants to generate shadcn/ui-style component code
  • Developers needing consistent UI across frameworks (React, Svelte, Vue, React Native)
  • Building AI-powered development tools or integrations
  • Teams that want an AI assistant to directly operate on GitHub repos and collaboration workflows
  • Users already in the GitHub Copilot ecosystem who want a zero-deployment remote option
Not for
  • Users not using shadcn/ui
  • Users needing other UI libraries (e.g., Tailwind UI)
  • Offline environments (requires GitHub API access)
  • Scenarios requiring fully local operation without external API dependencies
  • Scenarios where you don't want the assistant to have write access to repos (enable only read-only toolsets)
  • Environments with strict network isolation for private repos that can't reach the official remote endpoint
Required permissions
  • GitHub API access (to fetch component and repository data)
  • Network access (for GitHub API and npm package downloads)
  • Read environment variables (e.g., GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN)
  • Local filesystem operations (e.g., for build caches)
  • A personal access token (PAT) or OAuth App token; effective scope depends on the token's own permissions
  • Enabling toolsets like actions/issues/pull_requests grants write access — request tokens on a least-privilege basis
Risks and side effects
  • GitHub API rate limiting may cause service unavailability (60 requests/hour default, 5000/hour with token).
  • Supply chain risk from npm packages; verify package integrity.
  • SSE mode may expose the server on the network; configure CORS and access controls.
  • Component code may contain outdated or insecure patterns; review before use.
  • Write toolsets (creating/merging PRs, triggering workflows) can cause accidental changes if the token is overscoped — try a read-only toolset first
  • In hosted mode, credentials travel via the Authorization header — make sure the client-to-api.githubcopilot.com connection is trusted
