Smart Composer is an Obsidian plugin that helps you write efficiently with AI by referencing your vault content. Inspired by Cursor AI and ChatGPT Canvas, it offers contextual chat (with precise selection of files, folders, images, web links, and YouTube videos as context), one-click application of suggested edits, and vault search (RAG) for automatic retrieval of relevant notes. It also supports connecting to external MCP servers via the Model Context Protocol. The plugin is MIT-licensed, maintained by a single developer, and not under active development.

Tools

The tool list has not been reviewed yet.

Setup

In Obsidian, go to Settings -> Community plugins -> Browse, search for 'Smart Composer', click Install, and enable it. Then configure in plugin settings: add an API key or connect your Claude/OpenAI subscription. Note that a recent version of the Obsidian installer is required; if issues occur, manually update the installer.

Fit and risk

Best for

  • Obsidian users wanting to integrate note-taking with AI writing tools.
  • Users who want to use local models (like Ollama) or subscription services (Claude/OpenAI).
  • Content creators who need automatic context from large amounts of notes.

Not for

  • Users who require active maintenance and timely support (the plugin is not actively developed).
  • Users concerned about risks of connecting Claude subscription (possible account bans).
  • Enterprise users needing official support and prompt issue resolution.

Required permissions

  • Requires read and write access to the user's Obsidian vault for context and edits.
  • May send selected notes, images, and web links to the chosen AI service.
  • May connect to external services via MCP; data privacy should be considered.

Risks and side effects

  • Using Claude subscription OAuth via third-party clients may lead to account restrictions or bans (as warned in the README).
  • Free API usage may have privacy implications; review the provider's policy.
  • The plugin is maintained by a single developer, so bugs may not be fixed promptly.

Troubleshooting

  1. If the plugin fails to load, first try updating Obsidian normally (Settings > General > Check for updates).
  2. If issues persist, manually download the latest installer from obsidian.md, close Obsidian completely, and run the installer.
  3. For further help, report issues on GitHub.
